Andrew Talaimanu
Kohd Heritage: 8YGH3H
Andrew Talaimanu's place in Manurewa rugby is recorded in two lasting club honours: he is a men's centurion and a life member. Manurewa RFC lists him among those who played more than 100 senior games, and among the people recognised with life membership. His name also appears on the club's roll of Counties A representatives. Together, those records establish a connection built through club rugby, representative rugby and service to Manurewa.
That playing connection reached beyond the club. Counties Sports Hub records that Talaimanu made his Steelers debut in 1985 and represented Counties Manukau 38 times. Its account of the region's Pasifika rugby history describes him as a long-serving Manurewa player, coach and administrator whose contribution continued off the field. The distinction matters: his rugby story includes what he did after representing the province, as well as the matches in which he played.
Talaimanu went on to coach Counties Manukau during the early professional era. A contemporary record gives a precise point in that coaching history. The Argentine Rugby Union's 2001 annual report names him as Counties Manukau's coach for the match against Argentina at Pukekohe on 17 June. His provincial coaching belongs alongside his Manurewa playing record, while remaining a separate role from his work with the club and the local school.
At Manurewa High School, he helped create another opportunity for young players. An interview published by SportsJOE describes Talaimanu as a professional rugby coach and school trustee who started a rugby academy for students beginning secondary school. He saw a small, irregularly attending rugby group and potential for a more organised programme.
Bundee Aki entered the academy in its second year. Talaimanu was among his coaches, alongside others including Ian Foster. The programme combined early training with expectations about schoolwork and conduct. Rugby participation came with responsibilities in the classroom. This part of Talaimanu's work was about helping students develop within their school community, rather than simply preparing a team for its next match.
These are related contributions, but each deserves to be remembered accurately. His senior appearances and life membership belong to Manurewa RFC. His Steelers playing and coaching belong to Counties Manukau. The academy belongs to Manurewa High School. Each adds something specific to the record of a rugby life closely connected to the same South Auckland community.
At Manurewa, Talaimanu can be remembered as a player who reached a significant club milestone, a life member, a provincial representative and coach, and a contributor to school rugby. His story is strongest when those concrete roles are allowed to speak for themselves. The club's honours preserve his name; the wider record explains some of the work behind it.
