Jonah Tali Lomu MNZM called south Auckland home. Born on 12 May 1975 to Tongan parents, he attended Wesley College, where he excelled at athletics and rugby. The school was part of the Counties Manukau setting in which his sporting career began, before his performances brought him international recognition.

His connection to Counties Manukau was a playing relationship as well as a local one. He represented the province from 1994 to 1999. His representative debut came on 4 May 1994 against Horowhenua in Levin, in a match Counties Manukau won 108–12. That dated beginning places his provincial career alongside the emergence of the young player who would soon become known around the rugby world.

Counties Manukau's official history includes Lomu among its legends. The union was established in 1955 as South Auckland Counties, and its account also recognises players including Pat Walsh, Bob Lendrum, Bruce Robertson, Andy Dalton and Joeli Vidiri. Lomu's place in that company is a continuing public record of his association with the province. His Counties playing years preceded his move to Wellington in 2000, keeping the different stages of his provincial career distinct.

The 1995 Rugby World Cup brought Lomu worldwide fame while he was still a Counties Manukau player. His international reputation became part of a much wider story, but the provincial dates preserve the local connection behind that recognition: the Wesley College pupil and south Auckland resident was also representing Counties during those years.

Recognition followed beyond his playing appearances. In 2003, Lomu became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, carrying the postnominal MNZM. In 2007, he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame. These are separate honours, with their own dates, in the record of his rugby career.

Lomu died on 18 November 2015, aged 40. Ten thousand people attended his memorial service at Eden Park. Counties Manukau continues to name him in its history, linking that public remembrance to the province he represented. His Heritage story therefore holds together a specific place and a documented period of service: south Auckland, Wesley College and Counties Manukau, with his provincial playing years recorded as 1994–1999.
